Among other features of this service, the movie listings link to reviews. You can search for the film by title or any other aspect -- thus, for example, [movie: howard hughes] or [aviator] will put you one link away from a review page for "The Aviator".

I'm not always enthusiatic about Google's additions and changes; but this one seems brilliant. (It's even got a touch of humor: to wit, "No movie critics were harmed or even used in the making of this page.") (Which reminds me: I should start suggesting my own site as a link on other sites.)

One More Thing

Oh yes, and a site counter / traffic analyzer.

I get a basic analyzer with GoDaddy's hosting plan. Perhaps that's a blessing in disguise, because I downloaded TSW Web Coder, which is free and helpful.

I revised the HTML 4.01 to XHTML 1.0. I experimented with tables, but abandoned them for the original, straightforward design.

If I get more creative, I might want to bypass tables and try CSS instead. However, I'm not sure whether older browsers can handle them. (I'd like people with Windows 95 and a never-updated Internet Explorer to get use from this site, too. :-) )

Design suggestions -- more art and functionality, without eye strain or long download time -- are welcome.

In the meantime, my next steps are (1) to revise the link lists -- mainly by adding several links -- and (2) to allow the user to open a link in a new window without right-clicking.

Cool Features on the Way?

While revising the content, I might also add a few features, without jazzing up the site too much:

- An option to open a link in a new window

- An option to change the font

- An hours:minutes:seconds clock

Update to yesterday's posts: Now I do have some JavaScript (Google AdSense) on the site.

All About Review Revue (Part II)

I'm starting with three categories: books, movies, and music. I hope to expand once I get these pages in good shape.

In each category, I provide links to the main pages for free reviews of new offerings (recently published books, movies currently in theaters, recently released albums), as well as to other lists of links. "Free" includes free after registration. Perhaps I'll include links to subscription sites at some point.

I'm from the United States, and have focused on American sites. However, I've included some Canadian and British sites, and would like to expand coverage to other primarily English-speaking countries. If I'm ambitious, I'll create pages for German and French sites. (I'd probably need to find someone who can translate other languages, if this turns into a major project.)

I won't get into the details of my research techniques or selection criteria. Suffice it to say that I have more work to do.

I've left out Amazon and Barnes & Noble for the moment, since they don't contain hubs for reviews. Perhaps I'll include these sites in a future version, since they're good resources. And while I'm at it, I'll consider Epinions and the like. (Linking from the blog is a start, I suppose.)

I haven't included annotations yet, except for short bracketed notes on some entries.

I've arranged the sites alphabetically. Perhaps I'll decide upon another organizing principle, but alphabetical order strikes me as a good default choice.

No color, no images, no JavaScript, for now. I think the site looks nice in its unadorned state. Plus, it loads quickly.

Do you have comments about Review Revue? Criticisms? Suggestions? Please contact me at reviewrevue at yahoo.com. (Obviously, substitute @ for " at ". I'm hoping to avoid spammers by not publishing the address in its actual form.)

All About Review Revue (Part I)

Review Revue [version 1.0] is the first attempt at my first web site. (Better late than never.)

I'm a student in a library and information science program, and accordingly wanted my site to organize some useful information. My wife (thanks, Sara!) had the idea of links to reviews.

I wasn't sure whether someone had already done this. But my research so far indicates that no one has, at least not comprehensively in one place for multiple categories. (If there is such a site, I'll be sure to link to it!)

I went back and forth about the name. I've decided that I like it, though it's not the shortest or easiest name to type in a browser's address bar. If anyone has a better idea, I'm interested.

I made a brief attempt to host this site for free at Tripod (http://reviewrevue.tripod.com -- all you'll see now is a redirect to the current site and a link to the former book reviews page). To my surprise, even though there were no hyperlinks to and from the site (except the links supplied by Tripod), Google indexed it quickly and made it number one for some searches. I suppose that's a good sign for the current site.

Review Revue, Version 1.0

Review Revue is on the Web.

I have much to say about

- what it includes

- what it doesn't include (yet)

- how it is organized

- how it might be reorganized

- why I'm doing this

- how you can help

... but I'll leave all of that for another day.
